Stickin' it to the Man

Well, trying to at least.

Most of you know that I work for the housing system at a North Carolina university. My job is to train and manage employees at the 24 Hr Service Desk at one of the Residence Halls on campus, as well as handle minor administrative duties and work some hours each week at the desk myself.

It has come to my attention recently that despite my status as a full time student next fall, I will not be able to hold my position again. It seems that the time commitment between my job and student teaching is too much. I beg to differ, but that seems about as far as I can get with anyone. The people above me tell me that there would be split priorities and such, which would make sense were I an RA in the Residence Hall (which is how I am treated in most respects by the housing system). As an RA, I would be professionally obliged to assist in the development of both my residents and my students. However, since I am not an RA, I have no professional obligation to assist in the development of either residents in my residence hall or my employees, thus leaving me free to focus on my students as a student teacher.

Furthermore, the time commitment should not be much of an issue, since if I bust my rear for the first month and a half of the semester (when I wouldn't actually be student teaching yet) the desk pretty much runs itself.

I've talked to a couple of people above me and they seem to think that things can't change. I'm hoping and thinking differently and I guess biding my time until I can talk to the person who will help me get things changed. I'm not sure what all this will entail, but I hope to see the policy change within the few months.

By the way, I'm being vague about where I work, so in case things get circulated around, this won't get me fired.

Fall Break at the Outer Banks, NC

So over Fall Break (Oct. 6-9) I went to the Outer Banks of NC with Crystal to hang out with my dad and step-mom. We stayed in this ridiculous house and pretty much sat around and did nothing for three days straight. While we were there, I did get the chance to go to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for the first time in my life and spend some quality time with Crystal and my parents.

One of the biggest things that happened over the break was the fact that my parents watched 10 episodes of Firefly while we were there. That's all but 4 of the episodes ever produced (for those of you who are wondering, they watched all of discs 1-3 except "Bushwacked").

Anyway, if you're interested, Crystal and I took some pretty good pictures while we were there.
Here's a preview:

Very Frightening

So the Catholic Church (in England, Scotland, and Wales) apparently recently made a huge claim. Read the article here and let me know what you think. Frankly, I'm in shock.

it's the end of the world as we know it

You can't take the sky from me...

So Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy, Angel, and this amazing show called Firefly has blown us all away again. Serenity the movie was absolutely astonishing. I experienced every emotion I've ever experienced while watching movies, but within a two hour span. I recommend the movie to anyone and everyone, whether you've seen the series or not. Just go see it!!!
